Heart Health And High
Cholestrol!
|

|
|
Did
you know your cholesterol level could put you at risk of a heart
attack or stroke! Did you know there are two types of
cholesterol: "good" and "bad"? Cholesterol
comes from two sources: your body and food.
Your liver and other cells in your body make about 75
percent of blood cholesterol. The other 25 percent comes
from the foods you eat. Dietary cholesterol is found only in
animal food products such as meat, fish, poultry, eggs, and
dairy products. |
|
THE
IMPORTANCE OF A CHOLESTEROL SCREENING!
A
cholesterol screening measures your level of HDL and LDL.
HDL is the "good" cholesterol which helps keep
the LDL (bad) cholesterol from getting lodged into your artery
walls. When too much of the LDL circulates in the blood, it can
clog arteries. This can start increasing your risk of a heart
attack and a stroke. LDL cholesterol is affected by diet. So,
knowing which fats raise LDL cholesterol and which ones don't is
the first step in lowering your risk of heart disease.
HOW
IS CHOLESTEROL TESTED?
It
is tested with a small sample of blood taken from your arm. Your
doctor will interpret your cholesterol numbers based on
other risk factors such as age, family history, smoking and high
blood pressure.
Then talk to you about the best way to address your
results if your cholesterol is too high.
IT’S
ESTIMATED THAT EVERY 25 SECONDS SOMEONE WILL HAVE A CORONARY
EVENT AND IN ABOUT ONE MINUTE SOMEONE WILL DIE FROM ONE!

69% of Americans who have a first
heart attack have blood pressure over 140/90!
EASY
EXERCISE TIPS TO KEEP YOUR HEART HEALTHY!
·
Take
the stairs instead of an elevator or escalator at school or the mall. Just
start with one flight. Soon, you'll be ready for two.
·
Park
your car at the far end of the parking lot. The short walk to and from the
store or school helps your heart.
·
If
you ride a bus or subway, get off a stop before your destina- tion. Walk the
rest of the way.
·
If
you can, spend a few minutes of your lunch break taking a stroll around the
campus grounds. It should help you stay awake after lunch.
·
If
you have a family, schedule an after-dinner walk.
Make it family time.
